Montreuil is not far from Calais, and could be considered the nearest attractive French country town to Britain. Steer made painting expeditions there twice, and it was almost the only place abroad he visited. The purpose of the visit of 1907, when this view was painted, was to go on to Paris to see the memorial exhibition of Cézanne.
