Innocent X
Diego Velázquez  (1599-1660) Spanish court painter
c. 1650
Oil on canvas
Galleria Doria-Pamphili, Rome

One of the most famous portraits of all time. Unfortunately the red in this image is inadequate at faithfully portraying the painting.

The power of the Pope in Europe in the 17th century could not have been better conveyed. When the Pontiff saw his portrait, he said, "troppo vero" -- all too true!
