From: Adelson Galleries Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 Margaret Stickney, wife of the American artist William Sargeant Kendall and herself a weekend painter, was working on a watercolor outdoors in Fairford, Gloucestershire in 1892. According to the family lore, John Singer Sargent attempted to instruct Ms. Stickney. He took the watercolor from her and began a sketch of his own on the reverse which he signed, dated, and inscribed to her. Ms. Stickney's original unfinished sketch remains on the verso. (Adelson Galleries, Inc) Notes: Special thanks to Wendy & Gordon Hawksley, of Sheffield, England, friends of the JSS Gallery, for sending me a note regarding this image.
