From: Thyssen-Bornemisza "Sargent visited Majorca in 1908 following his decision to give up painting society portraits. Carrascal, Majorca lacks the emphasis of his previous works. The foreground is taken up by a low wall and dense foliage, barely leaving room for the sky. The brushstroke is fluid and open. "Sargent, however,
distanced himself
from a truly Impressionist approach; rather than focusing on nuances of
colour and light, here he retains both local colour and the material
quality
of the forms, emphasising an elegant chiaroscuro which enables him to
organise
the various different planes." Note: Sold Sotheby's; 5/25/1989; Lot 113; $55,000 Special

held at
the Thyssen-Bornemiseza museum which confirmed ownership; and Todd Milligan
for
help on images -- both friends of the JSS
