Mildred Carter was the daughter of American diplomat John Ridgeley Carter and Alice Morgan Carter. Two years after this painting she would marry Viscount Acheson in 1910, becoming Countess of Gosford on her husband's accession to the title as fifth Earl in 1922. (Christies)
