Strouse, Jean. Morgan: American Financier. Harper Perennial Books, 2000.

p. 649, in the footnote - "Sargent had done a portrait of Jack's [John Pierpont Morgan] wife, Jessie, in the spring of 1905. He asked her to bring a box of dresses to the first sitting so that he could decide what looked best in his studio's light, and set up a mirror in which she should watch him paint. She found it 'thrilling. . . He is very agreeable. I had 13 sittings.' As the portrait neared completion, Jack asked Sargent whether, 'as you are an American, it might be possible that your pictures could come into America free of duty.' A few weeks later, the banker urged the artist 'to do whatever is necessary at the Consulate to see that the picture comes through free of duty, and I shall be very much obliged to you for all your trouble.' The portrait, for which Jack paid GBP 1,050 - about $5,000 - is now at the Pierpont Morgan Library."

Lady Elsie Meyer
1908
Charcoal on Paper
24 ¼ x 19 in. (61.6 x 48.3 in.)
Signed and dated across the bottom ‘John S. Sargent  Feb. 1908’

Provenance:

The sitter’s father, Sir Carl Meyer; thence by descent; offered for sale by Christie’s, London, June 20, 1996 as lot 45; The Berger Collection

Exhibited:

600 Years of British Painting: The Berger Collection at the Denver Art Museum October 19, 1998-March 28, 1999; reproduced in the accompanying catalogue on p. 161.

The sitter was the daughter of Mr. (later Sir) Carl Meyer, and had been portrayed at age 11 with her mother and brother in Sargent’s 1896 portrait, Mrs. Carl Meyer and Children. At the time of this drawing (1908), Sir Carl Meyer was the chairman of the diamond company De Beers, and his daughter was surely a prize for any suitor. In 1909 she married St. John Lambert.

According the exhibit catalogue: “As ever in his portraits, Sargent aims for an image that transcends likeness in favour of character. There is still a reminder in the face of the serious, elegant young lady of the little girl he had painted eleven years earlier.” (p. 161)

Sargent Drawings in the collection of the Cecil Family (The Marquesses of Salisbury) at Hatfield House. Following are four catalogue entries from Painting and Sculptures at Hatfield House: A Catalogue Compiled by Erna Auerbach and C. Kingsley Adams, Constable and Co. Ltd., London, 1971. These are catalogue entries 216, 215, 220, and 198, respectively. The book is obviously somewhat dated, but I assume the drawings are all still in the family's collection.
