The house in that painting is an
old 19th century Maine farmhouse and is still there. It is not the house
in the Sargent painting.
From: Barridoff Galleries
The artist purchased half of the
island from the owners of the house depicted where John Singer Sargent,
Ross Turner, John L. Breck, and Childe Hassam, among others, were apparently
frequent visitors. A watercolor by Sargent titled “On the Verandah (Ironbound
Island, Maine)” was sold at Christie’s, New York, Important American Paintings,
Drawings and Sculpture, Tuesday, November 30, 1999, lot 62. (One cannot
begin to appreciate the beauty of this lot from the illustration. Among
other things, Blaney’s very subtle use of light to create texture and volume
is lost.)
