Mrs. Sackville-West
1905
Nigel Nicolson
Charcoal on paper
24 x 18 inches
This charcoal, completed by JSS
in an hour, was given as a substitute - an "amende honorable" - for a number
of failed oil protrait attempts to its subject, Lady Sackville-West. JSS
said his oil portrait "was not good enough to sign" and the good lady writes
of it as well, stating that JSS painted "a horrid face and was not pleased
at all when I told him I did not like it all ". JSS redeemed himself with
this lovely charcoal which Lady Sackville found "charming" |
