The rectangular shapes in the water are the oyster beds which extend 3 to 4 km along the coast. At the bottom (or below the photo) and towards north, the point of Grouin and the island of the Moors. (ac-rennes.fr)

Sargent painting took place to the right of the jetty -- looking to the left or south. It took place right in these historic oyster beds that have been there for hundreds of years.
