A struggling talented artist, he studied under T.H. Bartlett. He finally became noticed in Boston and was friends with Augustus St. Gaudens and John Singer Sargent. He would eventually get the commission for the front sculpture of the Museum of Fine Arts "Appeal to the Great Spirit" which is one of his best known works.

Sargent visited Dallin's home in Arlington, MA, just outside of Boston in 1916 where he sketched his front Portico.
