Sargent
Sketching in
the Alps
Date?
Henry
Tonks, British
Painter
Jpg: local
Here we have Tonks's
good friend:
Sargent sitting on his stool with his paint box and easel as one of his
helpers manipulates a rocking horse. Sargent would always say that he
could
only paint what he saw. This was a poke in the ribs for when Sargent
actually
took a stuffed gazelle to the Alps in 1908 to use as a prop -- one
painting
done this way was The Hermit. The strings, of coarse were a joke
showing
Sargent trying to paint a living animal from a prop.
