From: Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums The sitter was the older brother
of Joseph Farquharson RA who was a friend of John Singer Sargent. This
dashing portrait illustrates very clearly Sargent's bold use of brushwork
and limited palette. Robert Farquharson was laird of Finzean near Banchory
and also the member of Parliament for West Aberdeenshire. When he died
in 1918 his brother Joseph became laird of the estate that they had for
so long run in partnership. This work was painted whilst Sargent was staying
with the Farquharson family at Finzean.
