Henry G Marquand,
was second president
of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. The painting was done in Sargent's London studio in
the summer of 1897 and was commissioned by the Trustees of the Met.
Henry
was seventy-eight when this was done. Sargent had painted his wife in
1887
which was Sargent's first portrait commission within the United States.
