The painting is a copy of Diego Velázquez's  "King Philip IV as a Huntsman" which is hanging at the Prado. It highlights Sargent's interest in studying Velázquez for use in his portraits.

Sargent must have copied this work on one of his trips to Spain. The date is a guess by me but 1879 coincides with one of his trips to the Prado.
