1919                (63 years old)
Year In Context

January: he accepts a commission for  Some General Officers of the Great War [p].

May: he returns to Boston for further work on the Museum of Fine Arts rotunda murals. His sister Emily and Niece Reine accompany him.

Back in London at the Royal Academy, Gassed (1918) [p] is named picture of the year.

October: installs the last two panels at the Boston Public Library -- Synagogue and Church.

The center panel of the east wall  was never finished which was to be the Sermon on the Mount thus  linking the Hebrew and the Christian faith at a point of transformation for Christianity in the New Testament

The Nude Studies

For the most part, the nudes where done in study for the Boston Public Library murals as well as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts murals.

Dating of these studies and drawings are problematic at best. In some cases they can be linked with a specific mural and therefore narrowed, but in many cases they can't. I have left the dating done by the museums -- which in many cases are just guesses. I've included all of them under the year 1919 since he seems to have been working almost exclusively on the murals during this time.

The male nudes have raised speculation as to Sargent's sexual orientation -- for further discussion on this see: Was Sargent gay?

Footnote 1Footnote 1

"One large rectangular area over the stairwell was meant to depict the Sermon on the Mount, but this was never brought to fruition for reasons that remain unclear" (Sargent at Harvard).

The story I heard was that after Sargent had painted the Synagogue Panel, there were those upset with him over its inclusion in the cycle.

On October 24th, he writes his friend Charteris:

I'm in hot water here with the Jews who resent my "Synagogue" and want to have it removed -- and tomorrow a "prominent member of the Jewish colony is coming to bully me about it and ask me to explain myself. I can only refer him to Rheims, Notre Dame, Strasburg and other cathedrals and dwell at length about the good old times. Fortunately the Library Trustees do not object and propose to allow this painful work to stay. (Olson P.252)
Why he never finished the following panel, I don't know. What I do know, is that it was not in Sargent's character to just leave a project unfinished. What would be in his character would be to refuse any demands he felt were against his artistic principles and to leave, as he had left Paris, when he felt his work was not appreciated.

In the absence of The Sermon on the Mount's panel, I feel leaves the entire Public Library Mural work  incomplete, at least in its symbolism, and disjointed into two conflicting faiths. When in fact it was Sargent's intent, I believe, to show a continuum of the Judao Christian Faith.
