1920              (64 years old)
Year In Context

Still in America with his sister and niece, the first half of the year he works on the Museum of Fine Arts rotunda.

He helps Mrs. Hunter (painted her in 1898) sell her collection of art to Isabella Stewart Gardner for her museum.

April he makes donations of family memorabilia and dining room wallpaper to the Sargent House Museum in Gloucester, Massachusetts -- which is a Museum dedicated to Sargent's ancestors.

He would continue to travel staying with friends in New England during the years '20-'22. On a friends yacht he paints watercolors (See Photo of Sargent painting)

May: Emily and Reine return to England.

June: parts of the MFA rotunda is installed.

July he sails back to England.

By August he begins Some General Officers of the Great War. Sargent makes a study painting of each general

He exhibits at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI.

1921                           (65 years old)
Year In Context

In January he sails alone for New York and while there he visits his old close friend Paul Helleu who had painted the ceiling decoration in New York's Grand Central Station in 1912.  After a short stay, he travels to Boston to resume work on the MFA decorations: bas-relief, and oval panels.

June: he travels up to Montreal for a sitting of one of a generals for  Some General Officers of the Great War.

By August both his sisters and niece Reine arrive in the States.

On October 20th, the decorations for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston  Rotunda are unveiled.

He returns to London.

In November the trustees commission another set of murals to decorate the museum's stairwell. And Harvard University wants him to undertake panels for the Widener Memorial Library which he agrees.
