The work may have been executed at the Hotel Palumbo in Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, where Sargent stayed with Edwin Austin Abbey and his wife for several weeks in July of 1891. The work depicts Miss Elizabeth Lewis (Lady Lewis) who was later painted by [Sargent] in 1892.

Lady Lewis was the wife of Sir George Lewis.
