When Sargent was doing this study, he may have had it in his mind -- the general idea for a Christ figure for the Crucifixion, and here he was mulling over ideas on how to tackle the image. Notice the slight rightward tilt of the head (left to us) which he would use in the finale version of his Crucifixion (relief).
