I recently purchased a copy of an
old book by H. Montgomery Hyde entitled Londonderry House and its Pictures
(Cresset Press Ltd., London, 1937). On page 60 of this book it gives an
entry for each of three works that were then in the possession of the family
of the Marquess of Londonderry. In addition to the portrait of the sixth
Marquess of Londonderry as state sword bearer at the Coronation of King
Edward VII (which I believe is already fully detailed on the site), there
is an entry that provides some further detail on a portrait on your site,
that of the wife of the sixth Marquess, Theresa, Marchioness of Londonderry.
The entry gives the date of this portrait as 1912, measurements as 37 x
27 in. and notes that the subject is portrayed half-length, facing left,
wearing black coat, fur, and plumed hat.
In addition, the book gives the details
for a charcoal sketch of the daughter-in-law of this couple, Edith, seventh
Marchioness of Londonderry. Sargent completed this charcoal sketch in 1916.
It measured 24 x 19 in., and is described as a “charcoal sketch of head
and shoulders.”
Thought you might find these details
interesting.
