Year In Context

March 16-30: He gives another joint watercolor exhibition with Edward D. Boit in New York. After the exhibit, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) buys 45 of Sargent's watercolors and 38 of Boit's. Edward Boit had also recently loaned to the MFA his Sargent painting of the Boit's Children  Sargent had painted in 1882 (his children would gift it after Boit's death).

April: Monday the 15th at 2.20 am, the Royal Mail Ship Titanic sinks below the surface of the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg on on her maiden voyage. Of the 1,500 people drowned,  Mr. Frank D. Millet, Sargent's friend from the Broadway colony, was one of those who perished. He was traveling first class on his way to America.

August: in the French Alps with the Ormonds.

September thru November: he travels to Spain with Emily and the de Glehns. On to Seville and Granada and paints at the hospital and in the Alhambra.

He exhibits at the inaugural exhibition of Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. Three subject paintings at the Royal Academy, two at the New English Art Club, and two watercolors at the Royal Watercolour Society.
