One
of a series of ninety-one uniformly sized portraits and self-portraits
of artists, collected by the Aberdeen granite merchant and patron of
art, Alexander Macdonald (1831-1884). Alexander Macdonald died in 1884,
but his wife, Hope Gordon Macdonald, continued to collect portraits of
artists after his death. Macdonald had not owned any work by Sargent
but they were both friendly with Joseph Farquharson and it may have
been through contact with him, or with Sir James Murray that she
determined to acquire a likeness of Sargent. Sargent was thirty when he
painted this self portrait. Incorrectly dated by Charteris to 1907.
