Whitney Museum, NY &
The Art Institute of Chicago
1986-1987

Schedule

Whitney Museum, NY
October 7, 1986-January 4, 1987

The Art Institute of Chicago
February 7 - April 19, 1987

Overview

This was one of the most historically significant exhibitions since Sargent's death. Not since his Memorial Exhibition in 1925 (sixty-one years previous) had such an ambitious and balanced look at this artist (which in all honesty had fallen so far out of favor) ever been undertaken to that date. Even now, some seventeen years since the exhibition closed its doors in Chicago, it is hard to pinpoint a moment in time that equals the quantum jump in understanding and appreciation that took place as a result of the hard work that brought this together.

At the very same time, Stanley Olson's biography on Sargent was published.

The largest retrospective exhibition on Sargent's art since his death in 1925 -- 182 works were shown:

- 94 oils
- 49 watercolors
- 39 charcoal/pencil
