Your photo of "Breakfast in
the Loggia" hanging in the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. misses a striking
feature of its location. The painting hangs on a wall opposite the Freer's
own loggia, an open gallery formed by a colonnade. Although not identical,
the similarity between Sargent's loggia and the Freer's is striking. The
painting is not directly opposite the loggia, I assume to protect it from
sunlight entering through the ceiling-to-floor glass that separates the
Freer's inner courtyard from its interior.
Notes:
Special thanks to Andy Holzopfel,
of Baltimore, for taking this picture on his visit to Washington D.C. and
being a friend of
the JSS Gallery. See
