Year In Context

January-February: to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary, the London art and antiques dealer Asher Wertheimer asked Sargent to paint portraits of he and his wife.  The two pictures evolved into a series of twelve over the next decade, making this Sargent's largest private portrait commission.

(Wertheimer Family Portraits)

May: he's in Venice and stays at the Palazzo Barbaro and from here he paints An Interior in Venice and  Mrs. Ralph Curtis, the newlywed wife of his very dear friend and host. Then on to Bologna, Milan, Bergamo, and Ravenna where he continues studies early Christian mosaics.

June: he's back in London where portrait commissions dominate his time. He increases his fee to 1,000 guineas for a full-length portrait.

October-December: he executes the Dogma of Redemption, with crucifix for the Boston Public Library.
