1904                           (48 years old)
Year In Context

The painting William Merrit Chase is shown at the St. Louis Worlds Fair. Winslow Homer also exhibits showing watercolors and wins a gold medal.

He exhibits for the first time with the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours (now the Royal Watercolour Society or RWS). Shortly after his exhibit, he is elected an associate member.

After a 10 year absence, he exhibits once again with the New English Art Club. Spanish Solders (watercolor) is mentioned in that exhibit.

Over the next several years he exhibits a small number of watercolors annually at both the New English Art Club, and the Royal Watercolour Society.

July: London

August - September: he spends the first of what would be five consecutive summers at Purtud, in Vald'Aosta, Italy. He travels with friends. Among whom is a fellow painter Ambrogio Raffele. The weather might have been poor part of the time and he finds himself painting his friend a number of times in interior pictures. An Artist in His Studio, and In a Hayloft being two such paintings

September - October: travels to Venice and there he paints a portrait of Lady Helen Vincent in the Palazzo Giustiniani and many watercolors.

He is awarded the D.C.L. by Oxford University.
