1909                 (53 years old)
Year In Context

In February, Sargent exhibits in New York in a two man show with his long time friend Edward D. Boit (he painted Daughters of Edward Darley Boit in 1882) at the M. Knoedler & Company, New York galleries. For the first time in America his watercolors are available to be seen in number -- eight-six watercolors are shown.  After the two week show,  eighty-three are purchased by the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (now the Brooklyn Museum). It is almost unheard of that a large public institution should purchase such a large amount of watercolors from a contemporary artist in what, to date, was considered a minor medium. (Masters of Water Color and Light P.117)

Feb 24th, Vanity Fair publishes a caricature of Sargent called "A Great Realist".

March, works on Boston Public Library vaults and lunettes.

June: London.

August: Val d'Aosta. Simplon, with the Stokeses.

September  he meets the de Glehns and Eliza Wedgwood in Venice. They travel to Corfu. Spend Sept 29 thru November 16th at the Villa Soteriotisa

Light and Shadows, Corfu is a remarkable painting of John's use of light and is typical of his interest in capturing the impression of light on objects rather than their "natural" state.

Sargent is awarded the Order of Merit by France and the Order of Leopold by Belgium.

Two Girls in White Dresses is Rose-Marie Ormond painted twice (she's between 19 and 21 years old).

At the Royal Academy he exhibits Isael and the Law and Cashmere.
